Trash compactors have come a long way since those days. They are now considered appliances. Most can be easily installed under a kitchen sink. They are still trash cans, but with the added functionality to compact trash in a sturdy bag to create more space and add additional capacity. When started, a motor will turn on and operate a press that will compress and crush your trash together into a smaller, more compact area. Keep in mind that require specially designed stronger bags, and cannot be used with regular trash bags.
There are a lot of advantages to trash compacting. However, there are some draw backs too. These machines do reduce the need to take out the trash as frequently, since they compress your trash into a smaller area, the trash will not need to be taken out as much, therefore more bacteria can compile. Also, since they require special trash compactor bags, which are often brand specific, they can be me expensive, and can take longer to find or receive replacement bags.
They handle cardboard, from almost all food packages and containers, and papers very well. They are able to compress them into a much smaller area. However, glass containers and jars should not be thrown into trash compactors, because they may shatter under the power of the motor which could cause a very dangerous or hazardous situation. Also, food and liquids should not be dumped into them. Since they are not recycled as often as their traditional counterparts, over stuffed cans, food and liquids put into the trash compactors can create mold or odors. Therefore, it is important to try to keep food and liquids out of your compactor as much as possible.
Even though you have to monitor and keep an eye on what goes into a trash compactor, it is still a very useful and handy device. By eliminating overflowing cans in your cans, both inside and out, you can reduce the amount of times you have to take the trash out. People who may have difficulty getting around; people who order delivery foods, and order or buy a lot in bulk; or just don’t like to have to take the trash out a lot will enjoy the usefulness of the trash compactors.
You can often find these appliances at most leading retailers. Depending on size, most of them can be installed easily underneath your kitchen counter top.
